In this poem in presents love as a curse what follows him around .
This poem Is about a man , what remember the negative parts of he’s past relationships the positive he can’t think of . When the two separate he felt like it was not worth it . At the end of poem he’s telling you how there broke up . Neutral tones has a poem rhymes is a,b,b, a rhythm scram.
A example of Thomas Hardy creating negatively in poem is ” pond that winter day ” if a couple walking by a pond it’s normally describe as positive ,however it’s not present that way. You can tell that there relationship is is falling apart ,as he stand by pond you could fell the tension between these two . He was the victim in there relationship as he was not respect. “We stond ” there are using past tense this shows how it’s going to end bad , but he can’t get the bad memories out his head . The season is during winter and the fact that he has mentioned this suggests that it is a bad memory due to the fact that cold, winter days are known to be dull and miserable. This makes a link to how the love may have been quite negative and how there was no real bond. This also links to how the love may be portrayed as a curse as curses generally represent negative things. The fact that Thomas Hardy has mentioned riddles explains how their love may have been similar as they find it hard to understand and crack each other which is also the same scenario in a riddle
“the sun was white as, though chidden of God ” Chidden is of language for told of , it’s deeper than that it’s how God tells them off ,if God tell you of about your relationship it’s most be serious. Them days people where very religions and followed the bible , by saying the sun was drifting apart this how both of them was link together but when there drifting .
The next line use personification, to say how the ground was starving this link to quotation “leaves lay on the starving sod “This creates the feeling how the leaves are malnourished this link to there relationship how its died because there both don’t try at all she lost all her feeling for him . It was like there didn’t realise each other was there standing looking at ducks.
Another way in which Thomas Hardy has presented love as a curse would be by mentioning ‘love deceives’. This quotation also makes a link to a negative type theme through the word ‘deceive’. This word explains how their relationship was full of lies and how they were untrustworthy as they may have been doing things behind each others backs. This is a use of a metaphor because of how love cannot physically deceive but instead Thomas Hardy has compared it to their relationship in order to inform the reader of what type of relationship these two people share in the poem. The love can also be seen as curse as deceitfulness consists of lies and trickery and that can also be seen in curses.
Thomas hardy says how her smile was dead “mouth was the deadest thing ” this shows that her smile was alive for a sec than it died . ow the smile on the other persons face was fake and how there was no real bond in love between them. The fact that it was a fake smile can also show how their relationship was also fake as well but looked good from the outside similar to the smile. Also, the word bitterness shows how it was cutting into him and effecting him strongly similar to that of a lemon . This can be link to how it’s haunted or a curse I link this to relationships how it’s wasn’t strong and it was fake all of it now he thinks there a curse upon on he’s relationship .
In conclusion, I believe that Thomas Hardy has used the theme of their relationship to prove his ponit that there were curse on them and how she had the strength to end their relationship to show how it ends the way he use lots language devices this what I believe he wanted the neutral tones to make the reader feel how he does about this relationship.
